Right now, Lloyd’s of London is insuring climate wrecking coal mines, tar sands pipelines and power stations, across the world. Insurers can single-handedly stop fossil fuel projects, but have failed for decades to take action in the face of a climate emergency.
Lloyd’s accounts for 40% of the total global energy insurance premium and is a key influencer in the global insurance industry. Send Lloyd’s a message to act on the climate emergency, not act as the last refuge for climate wreckers to secure insurance!
Even in a year of lockdowns and restrictions, people across the world are standing up to Lloyd’s, and it’s working.
Leading the charge has been the #StopAdani movement in Australia. They have pushed most of Lloyd’s insurers to rule out insuring a coal mine that would open up the Galilee Basin and potentially more than double Australia’s current coal exports.
Adani's proposed coal mine is the most environmentally and socially contentious project in Australia's history, the object of years-long resistance from the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners and the broader community.
Just days after 750 people in the UK joined the Stop Adani movement by writing and calling Lloyd'd insurance companies, the extra pressure helped convince Brit to rule out insuring the Adani coal mine. Now the Stop Adani moment has asked us to pile the pressure on another key Lloyd's insurer - Hiscox.
Hiscox are rumoured to be sitting on an unreleased coal policy, that could see them stopping insuring all new coal mines. We want them to realise their policy ahead of the 3rd March, when they announce their annual profits.
Help #StopAdani get in touch with top Lloyd's insurer Hiscox now!

Last December in London, the CAN team protested with other climate campaigners for two days in freezing temperatures outside one of the world’s biggest events funnelling investment into expanding mining globally. The ‘Mines and Money Conference’ held in London’s Business Design Centre connected investors with projects and companies responsible for human rights abuses, ecocide, and fuelling climate chaos…
The UK Government has laid a Written Ministerial Statement confirming that it will introduce legislation to “restrict the future licensing of new coal mines”, by amending the Coal Industry Act 1994, “when Parliamentary time allows”. The UK Government’s press release is entitled “New coal mining licences will be banned”. Here at Coal Action Network, we thinks it’s great that the UK Government is following…

Former steelworker, Pat Carr, spoke to Anne Harris from Coal Action Network about the financial support offered to workers when the Consett steelworks closed in 1980, and they discussed what can be done better, in workplaces like Scunthorpe steelworks. (Article published in Canary magazine)
The proposed West Cumbria Coal mine lost its planning permission in September 2024. Since then its application to get a full coal mining license was refused by the Coal Authority, another nail in the coffin of the proposed coking coal mine.
Bryn Bach Coal Ltd is the coal mining company that operates the Glan Lash opencast coal mine, which has been dormant since planning permission expired in 2019. In 2018, it applied for an extension which was unanimously rejected by planning councillors in 2023. Undeterred, Bryn Bach Coal Ltd is trying again! This time with a slightly smaller extension of some 85,000 tonnes rather than 95,000 tonnes…

I am ashamed of a British Company still not listening to facts about Global Warming. PLEASE do not back Adani’s new Coal mine
I absolutely agree with the above. This seems hypocritical and perverse, especially as no good environmental reason has been proffered.
This is awful and not good enough for the local people and the same applies to the idea of such a mine flying in the face of what is supposed to be a climate crisis – a double crisis in fact the climate and the people they are proposing to disregard and invade.
It is beyond belied that companies are still determined to put profit before the terrifying facts of global warming. If members of your company have children aor grandchildren, think of their futures, and please do NOT support Adani’s proposed coal mine.
Say no to dirty coal!
