UK Coal has withdrawn its application to ruin the Northumberland countryside surrounding the village of Whittonstall. The application was the first of four for the area and was due to be heard on the 17th June.
The local people have fought a strong battle against the company since 2010. CAN thinks it is likely that UK Coal were expecting to be refused their application as the campaign against them was so successful.
UK Coal Surface Mines Ltd are once again struggling financially, entering into administration both this year and last. They have recently announced the phased closures of their last remaining deep mines at Thoresby and Kellingley.
Well done to the people of Whittonstall.
